Fellowshipping with Holy Spirit

One of the best things that Jesus ever did for us other than dying on the cross for our sins; was to send God Holy Spirit. God Holy Spirit is the most value person on this earth and it is a shame that we sometimes ignore His existence in our life. The only way we cannot ignore Him, is by fellowshipping with Him. You cannot ignore who you fellowship with.

The word fellowship is the Greek work koinōnia. It means the shared participation of multiple persons in one and the same reality — especially the life of Christ. So, then koinonia with Holy Spirit is when we share our reality with Him. We do not invite Him into our life, but we share our life with Him. There is not you and then Him, it is always us and we. We become one with Him. From my own personal experience, I tend to segment my life. There are things that are just for me to do and think about, and there are things that I can invite Holy Spirit in. That is not true fellowship with Holy Spirit. True fellowship is when He is involved in every area of my life.

Koinonia can be looked at from three different angles. They are communion, participation and sharing. Understanding these three will bring us much closer to fellowshipping with Holy Spirit. Let’s start with the first one, communion. Communion is when we are joined together in a shared relationship. For us to have communion with Holy Spirit, we must spend time in the word of God. In John 16, Jesus tells us that Holy Spirit will lead us into all truth. The truth of Jesus is contained in the Bible, hence our communion with Holy Spirit must start and end in the scriptures. It’s important to stay in the boundaries of the scriptures because there is safety. There are deceiving spirits that are eager to lead us astray but if you stay in the scriptures, Holy Spirit will reveal it all to you.

John 16:13-14, “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.”

Participation is when we let Holy Spirit actually play a part in our lives. A lot of time, we have our thing, and then Holy Spirit has his thing. We must change our minds to all is His. Romans 8:14, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons (daughters) of God.” Our sonship and daughterhood are based on how much we let Holy Spirit lead us. He wants to participate in all our lives, and He knows what’s best for each area of our life. If we just follow His leading, that is a sign of maturity. Children are led by their flesh while sons and daughters are led by Holy Spirit.

Matthew 6:19-21, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Sharing is when we allow Holy Spirit to have a say in our material possession. Look at the Matthew verse above especially verse 21. Verses 19 and 20 are encouraging us to focus on Heavenly treasure and not earthly treasure. Not because God doesn’t want us to have material things, but He doesn’t want material things to have us. That is the case of the rich young ruler in Mark 10. Jesus was not having him sell His belongs because Jesus wanted Him poor, He wanted Him to sell His belongings because they had his heart. Jesus doesn’t care about our material things; He just wants our whole heart. For us to truly fellowship with Holy Spirit, we must share our material possession with Him and let Him dictate how He wants us to use it.

For us to truly fellowship with Holy Spirit, we must let Him reveal the scriptures to us; we must let Him lead our lives and we must give Him permission to dictate how to use our material possessions.
